Snooze Alarm

Craving for a nap in spite of a good night's sleep? Don't laugh it off. You may be suffering from hypersomnia

Each person has a unique sleep requirement. While some cannot do without the trademark eight hours, others feel refreshed even after a five to six-hour sleep. Sleeping more than others isn't wrong, but if you find yourself yearning for sleep every now and then, it might be a matter of concern. Hypersomnia is the other end of insomnia.

  Always Sleepy

Hypersomnia is a condition where one experiences trouble staying awake during the day despite meeting the due sleep requirement. Such people are typical cases of 'can sleep anywhere anytime'. Getting up every morning is a difficult task, in spite of sufficient sleep; and the excess sleep interferes with everyday activities. The mind being constantly tired and looking for a nap, it affects concentration and mundane tasks too start seeming difficult.

Hypersomnia is marked by constant yawning and lethargy. In fact, hypersomniacs are often advised against doing jobs such as driving and handling heavy machinery.

  Types

Primary Hypersomnia

If you have been experiencing excessive sleepiness during the day for a long period of time, you might be suffering from primary hypersomnia.

Recurring Hypersomnia

This is characterised by a feeling of excessive sleepiness for short intervals. For example, a person may feel sleepy for three days at a stretch, and then the symptoms may disappear, only to resurface after many months, or even a year.

  Why So Sleepy?

Genetics

Your genes do play a role when it comes to hypersomnia. Sleep disorders such as narcolepsy too are genetic in nature. Narcolepsy is often accompanied with frequent bouts of sleep and in fact, at times, the urge to sleep can be irresistible.

Sleep apnea

Merely harping on the eight-hour sleep is not the solution, quality sleep is more important. Obstructive sleep apnea (where the person doesn't breathe appropriately during sleep) results in lack of oxygen in the brain, leading to the excessive sleepiness during daytime.

Obesity

The most common reason for obesity is excessive food intake and an inactive lifestyle. Lack of mobility too can result in a feeling of sleepiness during day. This cycle is difficult to break, as feeling sleepy only contributes to laziness and inactive lifestyle, worsening the obesity.

Medication

Various drugs, especially anti-depressants can cause a constant feeling of drowsiness. Ironically, this drowsy feeling can further aggravate the feeling of depression. To break the vicious cycle, it is best to consult the doctor and get a change of medication.

A head injury, a neurological disease or dysfunction in the nervous system are also possible, albeit rare reasons, for hypersomnia.

•    Consult your doctor who will conduct a detailed analysis of your lifestyle and accordingly, figure out the reason for your hypersomnia. However, many lifestyle traits can reduce the chances of the disorder. n Try not to have heavy meals. Have five to six small meals throughout the day. The frequent meals will maintain the body's glucose levels and help in dealing with drowsiness.

•    Restrict your consumption of caffeine and aerated drinks. You may look towards your cup of coffee to beat drowsiness, but it won't solve the problem. The sleepiness will return once the caffeine effect wears off. Two to three hours before sleep, do not indulge in coffee.

•    Lead an active lifestyle. If you are tired by the night, you are most likely to have a sound sleep, not only quantity, but also quality-wise.

•    Age-old remedies (such as a glass of hot milk before bed) can work wonders.
