What dogs really want

Think twice before you plan a rocking party to celebrate your pet's anniversary. . To understand your dogs' needs, just bond with them. Take them for regular walks, sit together in a park for even 10 minutes each day. That will forge a deeper bond and understanding with your four-legged mates. Unfortunately in the game of "my doggie cutest", owners often tend to harm them in more ways than one.
  Birthday bumps

A dog doesn't understand the concept of a birthday party. A gathering of other dogs can be very chaotic for your pet. "See if your dog likes having others in his/her territory,Usually, pets get very anxious about sharing their space and start thinking about how this will affect the pack dynamic.

You must consider the temperaments of other dogs. If they don't like being around each other, chaos will ensue and the birthday dog might spend the evening cowering in a corner or barking his/her head off. Not a great birthday, then!

Also consider the noise level. Dogs are hypersensitive to sounds, so popping balloons, loud music or noisy party favours will reduce the birthday dog to a nervous wreck.

Instead

Put him or her in a car and go out into the open. Go to a beach or for a trek where your pet can run off the leash. If your dog likes water, take him/her somewhere for a swim like at a beach or a pond. That would be a real party!
  Parlour Grooming

Few hours of brushing, washing, clipping and shampooing later, your dog emerges smelling like roses and with a bow in the hair. But s/he might not have enjoyed the process even though you might be thrilled at the makeover. A dog's own smell is individualistic. Also, a strong smell irritates the dog's nose. If you've noticed your dog run around and rub his/her face on surfaces just after a bath or grooming, understand that s/he's just trying to rub the smell off.

Further, clothing is also irritating, unless it's extremely cold. There is also the fear of your dog swallowing a bow or trinket that s/he is trying to get off of his/her body.

Instead

Clip overgrown nails regularly. Better let a professional do this, or learn how to clip them at home from your vet. But to keep nails short, just let your dog play and run; this files the nails to size.

Use a soap or shampoo that does not have a strong smell, medicinal or floral. Though it is believed that you should bathe your dog regularly, it's not imperative for house dogs; they can go upto three weeks without a wash. Brushing them regularly helps stimulate the natural oils keeping the coat clean.

Take a professional's help because an expert may be able to spot a skin infection that you may not notice.

  Special Beds

Wicker baskets with tartan beds are very adorable, but the object of your affection can be moody. In Mumbai's weather, a soft fluffy bed is as comfortable as an oven.

Instead

Try various things to see what your dog prefers. Spread out an old blanket, sheet or towel and see if your dog takes to it. If s/he favours the floor, so be it!

  Imported treats

Fancy treats, often, are just a result of your guilt for not giving pets enough time and attention. Unless used for reward, treats should be kept to the minimum. Your dog does not know the difference between an expensive treat and a carrot stick, unless you've never introduced him/her to the latter. Untimely treats also make a dog obese, so watch out.

Instead

Introduce your pet to crunchy healthy things such as carrot sticks, plain, unsalted biscuits and fruits. Through a method of trial and error, you'll see what s/he prefers most and these can be used as rewards while training. As for food, a healthy meal — home-cooked or packaged pet food — is what the vet prescribes.
  Walks

You've got a dedicated house-help to take the pooch down every few hours, and all you're doing is petting him/her on the head when you walk in through the door. Bad habit!

Instead

Give your precious time to your pet. Just like a child, your dog wants attention and some amount of play time with you. This could be in your home or in the park — it could be a game of fetch, or hide-n-seek, or just sitting on the bench together. A house-help might not be careful or sensitive to his/her needs.
