Baby's Day In

 During pregnancy

If you're a mother-to-be, you'll get advice from all directions. This is also a time when your body undergoes several changes, so you are expected to be more disciplined with your eating. Follow these tips…

An upset stomach is a common complaint during the first few days. Having two pieces of anjeer regularly can minimise their frequency.

Though most of your diet would be normal in the initial weeks, using soaked lentil and pulses in your food will only help. Dishes such as idlis and dosas retain nutrients and are easily digestible.

Your efforts to deliver a healthy baby begin in the first trimester itself: get into a habit of having a mixture of desi ghee (15 gms), raw sugar and black pepper. While the ghee is instrumental in strengthening the child's bones, the sugar and black pepper reduce the heat inside your system.

More self-help mantras include fine-chewing pieces of coconut and saunf. While the former acts as a digestion problem-buster, the latter gives a cooling effect.

There are things to steer clear of as well: such as not eating too much ripe papaya, nutmeg, chilli powder apart from deep-fried foods.

Having warm milk flavoured with some turmeric can do wonders to your vigour, since you are frequently likely to get tired and complain of body ache.

 After Delivery

HARIRA

Ingredients:  200 gms dry ginger powder, 200 gms ajwain (carom seeds)   200 gms finely ground saunf  200 gms cumin seeds n  250 gms almonds (cut pieces) n  250 gms jaggery.
Method: Roast all the spices separately in a fry pan. In a heavy-bottomed pan put jaggery and add the roasted spices. Cook until the jaggery melts. Transfer the mixture in another pot and let it cool. Once cooled, store in an unclosed jar. Use a muslin cloth to cover the neck of the jar. Store at room temperature.
Why it's good: Harira helps you recover the blood loss after delivery. It also helps in preventing back ache.Very effective and spicy, it is recommended to be taken only for about two weeks after delivery, in quantities as small as 2-3 tea spoons every morning.

NEEM KADHA
Ingredients:   Tender neem sticks (crushed) and water.
Method: Crush the neem sticks and mix them with a glass of water. Strain with a clean cloth and drink on an empty stomach. Methi laddoos pair well alongwith this, but only after 15-20 minutes.
Why it's good: Neem kadha is very effective in purifying your blood, a much-needed function of your body system post-delivery.
SUJI HALWA

Ingredients:   100 gms semolina (rava)   40 gms jaggery    2 nos. cardamom   30 gms ghee   Water as per consumption.
Method: Heat ghee in pan and fry the semolina. Add the elaichi and fry further. Add jaggery, when it melts, add water and cook for a while. Be careful of this halwa being thin and not thick. Eat the sweet only after it cools down.

Why it's good: Suji halwa in the mornings is a granny's recommendation. Easy to prepare, low-fat by nature and fortified with vitamins and minerals, it can satisfy your cravings for bread, pasta or other carb-rich foods. Suji halwa can be had even after delivery.
METHI LADDOO
Ingredients:   300 gms methi seeds   400 gms dry coconut   500 gms dry dates   200 gms groundnuts   500 gms desi ghee   500 gms rawa   2 kgs jaggery   100 gms each — almonds, cashewnuts and pistachios.
Method: Heat ghee in a pan. Add the ingredients one by one after having roasted them seperately. Crush the roasted methi before adding. In a heavy-bottomed pan, add jaggery and make it into a syrup. Add all the mixture of ghee and the roasted ingredients to this and mix thoroughly. Once the mixture cools a little, roll it up into laddoos, each ideally of 60-70 grams. Store them at room temperature and cover them with muslin cloth.
Why it's good: Methi has abundant benefits. Apart from being an appetiser, an anti-flatulent and a hervine tonic, methi is very effective post delivery as it promotes lactation and controls body-aches. Prior to delivery, it is also instrumental in strengthening your spinal chord.

 Mommy Matters

After your delivery, whenever you bathe, use ajwain water for a week. It eases out the post-labour pains and gives you a refreshing feel.

Whenever you have tea, add a pinch of salt to it to avoid acidity.

Avoid meat, fish and spices. Stay away from heat-creating veggies such as garlic and ginger as well.

Don't overheat your food and don't eat sour foods.

Drink a lot of water, sleep properly and don't get over-excited or anxious.

Early morning walks are always helpful. However, don't don any tight outfits.

If you are having digestion problems, have lemonade regularly rather than bombarding your system with digestive tablets.

Dried anjeer and beetroot aid blood purification.

Please consult your gynaecologist if any of your home remedies does not suit your body or has side effects.
