Shavari with mom Anagha Raje

Sneha says

Cold is often caused by weak digestion. Due to indigestion, food changes into ama or mucus which reaches the respiratory system and causes cold.

Her ideal diet should be:

Morning: 1 tsp of honey with ginger

Breakfast: A glass of milk (with a piece of crushed ginger and 1/4th tsp turmeric powder) and a fruit.

Dabba: Veggies and paneer rolled in rotis / Moongdal paratha with curd and one fruit

Lunch: 1 phulka, 1 bowl of vegetable, 1 rice bowl, dal and 3-4 pieces of chicken or fish.

Snacks: A milkshake with a bowl of sprouted moong bhel or an open-face sandwich with beans.

Dinner: One phulka, vegetables and some veg khichdi-kadhi.

She must cut down on noodles and wafers. Else, make it nutritious by adding vegetables. Home-made wafers are better that packaged ones.

 Daya turbhekar, 8

Likes shammi kababs, fried kheema parathas.
Has white patches on her face diagnosed as calcium deficiency.

Diet report card

Breakfast: Tea with 10 glucose or sunfeast biscuits/ 4-5
butters/khari/ or 3-4 bread slices with butter or jam

Before school: Two almonds, two cashew nuts, 3-4 raisins, one dried date (kharik)

Dabba: 2 chapattis, vegetables or an omelette or banana/potato wafers/farsan.

After school snack: Potato chips, banana wafers.

Lunch: Fruits, Dal-rice, 2 chapattis and vegetables, or fish or mutton,

Tea-time: Same as breakfast.

Dinner: Mostly same as lunch.

Sneha suggests

Daya's diet is deficient in calcium and high in refined sugars and junk food. Avoid biscuits, bakery items and fried foods; instead emphasise on calcium rich foods such as milk and milk products, cereals, nuts and dark green leafy vegetables. Incorporate sesame seeds (til) in the form of til chikki, ladoos or add them to vegetables. To effectively absorb dietary calcium, the body needs Vitamin D, which comes from two sources: sunlight and food. Just 10 to 15 minutes of sunshine thrice a week is enough.

Daya with mom Smita Turbhekarr

Breakfast: A glass of milk (Preferably buffalo milk as it has a higher calcium content) poha/ Upma/ 2-3 idlis with sambhar/ scrambled egg with roti

Before school: A fruit.

Dabba: 1 chappati with a cheese slice; fruit or vegetable / methi paratha with curd.

After School Snacks: 2-3 almonds, 2-3 walnuts, 1 dry date, 2 anjeer and raisins

Lunch: 1 Ragi (Nachni) roti, vegetables (leafy green vegetables thrice a week), rice-dal, 3-4 pcs of chicken or fish.

Tea-time: 1 glass milk + 2 til ladoos or 2-3pcs of rajgirha chikki, 1 fruit (citrus fruits like orange or papaya).

Dinner: 1 roti, 1 bowl of palak paneer, rice-dal.

Meghna (12) and Malini (9) Dasgupta

Love vegetables, but not non-veg, a cause for concern in the Bengali household.

They also experience acidity pains occasionally.

Diet report card

Breakfast: Milk and cornflakes/ toast, scrambled eggs or omelette, fruit and milk

Dabba for Meghna: Banana wafers, or 4 cream biscuits/ a muffin/ few chaklis

Meghna's lunch: Idlis / cheese or chicken salami sandwich/ 2-3 Aloo parathas / home-made chicken burger/ 2-3 dosas

Malini's lunch: Dal-rice with vegetables or fish.

Tea-time: Maggi noodles or toast and eggs, a cup of milk. One fruit, or biscuits /popcorn/ cheese toast with the fruit.

Dinner: 2 rotis, dal and bhaji, chicken curry, kheema or soya chunks and salad

Sneha suggests:

Acidity is caused due to excess production of hydrochloric acid in stomach. Foods such as wafers, biscuits, chaklis, spicy gravies, oily food etc will only increase acid secretion hence  limit their intake. Emphasise on fibre rich food such as whole grains, pulses, fruits and vegetables. Cow's milk should be preferred over buffalo's milk since it's easy to digest. Avoid keeping long gaps between two meals as it increases acid production. Avoid lying immediately after eating.

Meghna (left) and Malini (right) with mom Ranjana Dasgupta

Breakfast: Cow's milk with cereal or an egg with roti, upma or poha, and one fruit

Dabba: Paneer paratha with curd or dalia with veggies and fruit.

Lunch: Chappati, vegetable, dal, fish or chicken and rice.

Tea-time: Milk, palak dosa or paneer roll/ sprouts bhel/ potato and moong tikkis and one fruit.

Dinner: Salad, two rotis, vegetable, khichdi with curd or kadhi.
