Nutrition is a commonly misunderstood subject among many. Many under-informed youngsters often go overboard with 'health diets' and end up harming themselves. ODing on 'health supplements' too is wring, when natural food can do the job. Here's what one's obsession with nutrition can do:

  Proteins

Acidic blood

Having excessive proteins makes the blood acidic. As soon as your body realises this, an automatic mechanism is triggered off wherein the body tries to neutralise the acidity by releasing basic elements in the blood, and the most basic element in our body is calcium. Excess calcium in the blood means less for the bones. As a result, your bones turn weak and make you vulnerable to fractures. Moreover, in the long run, it will increase the risk of osteoporosis.

Kidney stones

Too much calcium in the blood is added work for your your kidneys to remove the calcium deposits floating in the blood. These calcium deposits get accumulated and in the long run lead to kidney stones. In short, excess proteins equals more calcium release in the blood and hence, higher chances of kidney stone.

Ketosis

'Go easy on carbohydrates; stock up the proteins' is considered the ultimate mantra for a fitter body. However, go overboard with it and your body won't have enough carbohydrates (the preferred source of energy for the body). This means that the body will look towards fat or proteins as a source of energy. In the long run it causes great harm to the liver. Metabolising proteins is far more taxing for the liver as compared to metabolizing carbohydrates. This unnecessarily stresses the liver and can cause loss of muscle tissues.

  Vitamins

While it's very rare for someone to overdo vitamin intake via a natural diet, indiscriminate popping of vitamin pills (perceived to be healthy) can bring along its own share of negative effects.

Vitamin A: Can lead to irreversible damage to the bones (increasing the risk of osteoporosis) and can also cause harm to the liver. Also, a word of caution for pregnant women: having excess of Vitamin A during pregnancy may lead to birth defects in the child.

Vitamin B1: May create a deficiency of Vitamin B2 and B6. Because there's a close relationship between B Vitamins, inadequate intake of one may interfere with the proper utilisation of others.

Vitamin B6: It causes harm to the nervous system and may lead to deadening of certain nerves. As a result, the person may face problems doing tasks that require simple bodily coordination.

Vitamin C: May lead to diarrhea and affect the utilisation of copper in the body. Also, since Vitamin C is vital for iron absorption in the body, those suffering from excess iron in the body should be particularly wary of their Vitamin C consumption.

Vitamin D: Since this vitamin plays an important role in bone and teeth formation, overdose of Vitamin D may lead to hypercalcemia (abnormally high level of calcium in the blood). The symptoms of the same include fatigue, nausea, depression and vomiting.
