Sacrifice for Allah alone
SACRIFICING (an animal) with the intent of getting closer to Allah is one of the acts of worship that must be done for Allah alone.
Sadaqah (charity), Hady (sacrificial offering during Haj), and Udhiyyah (sacrifice during Eid Al-Adhah) are means, and to get closer to Allah by these acts of worship shows one's sincerity in Tawheed. (This is illustrated) in the willingness one has while carrying out the command of Allah.
However, if a person sacrifices for anyone other than Allah, for example for a jinn or for a dead person or certain righteous person who has passed away or for some star as some non-Muslims do or for a king, then all of these are acts of Shirk. Allah commands that all types of sacrifice should be directed to Him meaning that a person should have sincerity towards Allah.
Allah said:
"Therefore turn in prayer to your Lord and sacrifice (to Him only)." (Qur'an, 108:2)
Say (O Muhammad, peace be upon him): "Verily, my Salat (prayer), my sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for Allah, the Lord of the 'Aalameen (mankind, jinn and all that exists).
"He has no partner. And of this I have been commanded, and I am the first of the Muslims." (Qur'an, 6:162-163)
So whoever sacrifices for other than Allah has committed an act of Shirk.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Allah has cursed the one who sacrifices for other than Allah, and Allah has cursed the one who curses his parents and Allah has cursed the one who changes the boundaries of the land that he tills." (Sahih Muslim)
