Your time starts now

Despite much awareness and helplines, board exams still see frantic parents and stressed children. With the HSC exams round the corner, student counsellor Mansi Hasan tells you how to work smart

 IDENTIFY YOUR PROBLEM AREAS

Stress

Some of the most obvious physical symptoms of exam stress are:

The child eats too little or too much
He/she gets palpitations
Complains of loose motions, headache or stomach upsets
Is lethargic and irritable.

Tackle it…

…By sticking to the basics - eat and sleep well: The pressure might be giving you sleepless nights, but plan your schedule in a way that it allows you at least 6-7 hours of sleep.

…By telling yourself to be positive: If you find yourself constantly worrying, try and consciously change the thought process. Think about the holiday with your friends, or the party you have planned to throw  after the exams. That itself should pep you up.

….By taking a walk or listening to music: Take frequent breaks during which do any activity that pleases you. Go for a brisk walk, listen to  music, watch TV, or play with your pet. Else, if talking gives you comfort, just talk it out with your parent or friend.

Difficulty in memorising

Despite doing your best to memorise formulas, dates and concepts, you go blank when you are in front of the paper.

Tackle it…

…By following the 3R formula - Retain, Revise and Recall.

….By highlighting important points during revision. Take the crux of those points, form pneumonics and try to memorise those.

…By taking short naps the day before the exam. Else, sleep deprivation can lead to difficulty in recalling.

 STUDY SMART

A good study place

It might sound trivial, but your study environment makes a lot of difference to your mood. Try to ensure that your study place is:

Available to you whenever you need it and you don't need to share space
Is free from interruptions and distractions
Contains all your study materials like pens, calculator etc.
Is not cluttered and has enough storage space. You wouldn't want to add to your stress levels looking for scattered notes and missing pages
Has enough light and a comfortable temperature.

 STUDY STRATEGIES

SQRW: Survey, Question, Read, Write - is a simple  strategy for reading and taking notes. These notes will also prove to be useful when you do your LMR (last minute revision)

Survey: Read the title headings and summary/ conclusion. Also examine visuals, tables or graphs to help you remember what the chapter was all about

Question: Have questions in your mind as you read; it gives you a purpose and helps you stay focused

Read: Read the information that follows each heading to find the answer to each question you formed

Write: Write down the most important points either by coding them or any suitable shortcut techniques.

 EXAM DAY SCHEDULE

How should study the day before the exam?

First and foremost, never study on an empty stomach.
Don't study beyond two hours at a stretch. Take a break of at least 15-20 minutes before each session
Bring variety in your revision. For instance, if you have been reading a chapter for long, then when you move on to the next chapter, revise it by writing down the important points
Mind exercises can help you be alert. Try solving some in your break.

 BOARDS? BRING THEM ON

Jigna Bhatt shows no signs of stress as D-day nears. Her daughter Himanshi will appear for her board exams soon, but the Bhatt household is doing everything to keep things as 'normal' as possible. "We have always laid more importance on the efforts than the marks," says Jigna.

Himanshi, a student of Swami Vivekanand International School, agrees. Her schedule is neatly planned. Six hours of study plus two hours of paper solving. On Sundays, she studies for three hours and devotes one hour to solve question papers. She has a few suggestions for her counterparts: "Don't change your notes at the last moment. If you feel you go blank before the exam, avoid last minute revisions; it adds to your stress. To keep yourself mentally fresh, have loads of nimbu paani.  Finally, don't say no to TV or  movies; just don't overdo it."
